Prerequisites

Before installing ProjectClone, ensure you meet the following requirements:

Jira Administrator Access

You need Jira system administrator permissions to install Forge apps.

Atlassian Account

Active Atlassian account with access to the Marketplace.

Source Project

At least one existing Jira project to use as a template for cloning.

Supported Jira Versions

ProjectClone works with Jira Cloud instances. It's built on the Atlassian Forge platform and requires no server-side installation or maintenance.

Install ProjectClone

Visit Atlassian Marketplace

Go to the Atlassian Marketplace and search for "ProjectClone" or visit the direct app listing.

Install to Your Site

Click "Get it now" and select your Jira instance. The installation process typically takes 2-3 minutes.

Automatic Setup

ProjectClone automatically configures itself during installation. No additional server setup or configuration files are required.

Verify Installation

After installation, you'll see ProjectClone in your Jira administration area under Apps → Manage apps.

Initial Setup

Configure ProjectClone for your organization's needs:

Access Admin Configuration

Navigate to Settings → Apps → ProjectClone Configuration in your Jira administration panel.

Configure User Permissions

Set up which users or groups can clone projects. By default, only Jira administrators have access.

  • Add specific users by username or email
  • Grant access to entire user groups
  • Set project-specific cloning permissions

Test Access

Verify that authorized users can see the ProjectClone option in their project menus.

Your First Project Clone

Let's walk through cloning your first project:

Navigate to Source Project

Go to the project you want to use as a template. In the project sidebar, click Project settings.

Access ProjectClone

In the project settings menu, look for "Clone Project" in the left sidebar under the ProjectClone section.

Configure Clone Settings

Fill in the new project details:

New Project Name: "Marketing Team Q1"
Project Key: MKTQ1
Project Lead: john.doe@company.com

Select Schemes to Copy

Choose which schemes and configurations to clone:

  • Workflow Scheme: Copy custom workflows and transitions
  • Permission Scheme: Maintain user access controls
  • Issue Type Scheme: Copy custom issue types
  • Field Configuration: Preserve field settings
  • Components: Clone project components with leads
Scheme Selection

You can choose to copy schemes from the source project or use existing schemes. Copying schemes creates independent configurations for the new project.

Execute Clone

Click "Clone Project" and wait for the process to complete. This usually takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on project complexity.

Verification

After cloning, verify everything was copied correctly:

Project Structure

Check that components, versions, and project roles are correctly configured.

Workflows & Schemes

Verify workflows, issue types, and field configurations are working as expected.

User Permissions

Test that team members have appropriate access levels and project roles.

Clone Complete!

Your new project is ready for use. All configurations, schemes, and settings have been preserved from the source project. Team members can now start creating issues and working in the cloned project immediately.
